You can take a guided Segway tour at the Omni Amelia Island Resort without booking a room, because Amelia's Wheels opens its Segway tours to the public. The desk sits inside the resort, between the Falcon's Nest and The Spa. Bike rentals are a different story: the resort rents bicycles only to its guests and to property owners in the Amelia Island Plantation community.
The tour on the schedule now is the Marshside and Creekside ride, about an hour and a half long. It starts with a coached orientation, and there's one coach for every five riders. From there the group follows novice-level resort paths out to Drummond Point Park or Walker's Landing. Reservations are required, and there's a fee if you cancel within 12 hours of the tour.
Who can ride:
- Segway riders must be at least 8 years old and weigh at least 65 pounds.
- Ages 8 to 15 count as children and have to be accompanied by an adult.
- Island Hopper golf cart drivers must be 16 or older with a valid driver's license.
If you're staying at the resort or own in the Plantation, the desk also rents single-speed cruisers, tag-along bikes, baby joggers and child trailers. About seven miles of bike trails run through the property toward Aury Island, Drummond Point Park and Walker's Landing, and trail maps are at the counter. The four- and six-seat Island Hoppers are gas carts for the resort's paved roads, and non-guests can rent those. Bikes and carts can't leave Amelia Island Plantation property. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
