You can hear the island's ghost stories from its own history museum on any Friday night: the Amelia Island Museum of History leads a walking ghost tour every Friday at 6 p.m. It doesn't leave from the museum building. You meet your guide in front of the cemetery behind St. Peter's Episcopal Church at 801 Atlantic Avenue.
The tour lasts about an hour and covers roughly 14 blocks of the historic district, with stories of ghosts and haunted buildings along the way. Some of the walking is on cobblestone streets, so wear shoes that can handle it. The museum's booking page lists the tour for ages 5 and up, with a maximum of 20 people per group. You can buy tickets at the museum on South 3rd Street or online, and the museum posts any schedule changes on its Facebook page.
The museum runs other walks too:
- The docent-led 8 Flags Tour is included with admission, Monday through Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
- A Pub Crawl goes out on the first and third Wednesday of each month. It's reservation only and limited to ages 21 and up.
- Special and group ghost tours can be arranged by calling the museum at 904-261-7378.
- Docent walking tours of downtown are available by reservation for groups of four or more.
The museum itself is housed in the former Nassau County Jail, and the Amelia Island Museum of History entry covers its exhibits and hours. Ghost Tours of Amelia Island is the separate, privately run option. Its walk is longer, it hands out ghost hunting gear, and it ends at the same St. Peter's cemetery where the museum's tour begins.
