If you need a dry bag before a paddle, a tent for a state-park overnight, or a jacket you didn't think Florida would call for, Lost Dog Outfitters is the outdoor gear shop on South Eighth Street. Despite the name, it isn't a pet store. It's an outfitter for camping, paddling, hiking and fishing, though it does keep leashes, harnesses and travel gear for dogs who come along on the trip.
New gear and apparel share the floor with gently pre-owned pieces. The shop takes outdoor equipment and clothing on consignment, names Patagonia, Cotopaxi and Merrell among the brands it looks for, and says every used item is inspected before it goes out. If you've got gear sitting unused in a closet, you can bring it in to consign.
Paddling gets the most detailed treatment on the shop's site:
- Kayaks and paddle boards, with PFDs in a range of fits
- Paddles in carbon and fiberglass, including adjustable models
- Dry bags, paddle leashes, bungee cords and kayak carts
- Throw ropes, whistles, first aid kits, compasses and headlamps
The rest of the store covers tents, sleeping bags, camp fuel, s'mores kits and campground games; rods, reels and tackle; sunglasses, hats and sunscreen; and men's, women's, kids' and teen apparel with shoes, sandals and flip-flops. The shop is at 17 South Eighth Street, open daily, and posts courtyard events on its site.
It's a sensible stop before a guided paddle with Amelia Adventures Kayak Tours or the inland camping trip in the Gold Head Branch State Park guide. For dog food and fresh-baked treats rather than leashes and harnesses, Redbones Dog Bakery and Boutique is farther south on the same street.
